Born and raised in Topeka, Kansas, Patrick Hothan received his BFA from Washburn University in 2011. His early work includes drawings, printmaking, photography and multiple mediums in painting as he developed an expansive foundation to support his future work. Near the end of his undergraduate eduaction in the arts he shifted his focus primarily to painting before the start of his MFA candidacy.
In 2014, Patrick completed his MFA in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute. His work became focused on the development of the contemporary still life often including objects easily recognizable throughout popular culture. The found objects he uses provide a sense of life within his still life paintings that otherwise remain overlooked as the discard on the streets and sidewalks of California. Warm natural lighting provides a strong contrast and sense of space for the objects to exist in captured so precisely with the use of a photographic source.
